Surgery gone wrong: Dr. Miguel Delgado on choosing licensed plastic surgeons

November 16th, 2011

In a society where a person’s appearance is often talked about, scrutinized, and judged, internationally renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Miguel Delgado understands the desperation that drives some patients to risk their lives self-administering plastic surgery, rather than choosing to go under the knife with a specialist’s supervision.

An example of this is a woman who previously had Botox and Restolyne. She wanted to correct a small facial mark but balked at the idea of using medical-grade silicone because it costs hundreds of dollars. Taking matters into her own hands, she scoured online for a good purchase of silicone and eventually found a site that sells it for $10/bottle. Mimicking her doctor’s actions, she proceeded to inject the silicone into her face and lips.

The next day, the woman’s face became swollen and red, her lips erupting in blisters. Dr. Miguel Delgado and the rest of the plastic surgery community were not surprised to find out that what she purchased was personal lubricant. She needed the help of plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Williams to perform a corrective procedure.

Unfortunately, her decision to seek help from a license plastic surgeon is already too late. The corrective process involves more than simply sucking out bad silicone–Dr. Williams have to create an incision and cut out the infected areas. It took several surgeries before all the infected areas were removed, and the woman did not look the same again.

The society’s impression that cosmetic surgery is foolproof could be attributed to the rise of self-performed procedures. Dr. Miguel Delgado and other plastic surgeons emphasize that by trying to save a few dollars these patients were compromising their own looks, health, and even finances; that they could be injecting into the wrong area, damaging neurological and vascular structures, and inducing infection are not worth the risk.
